SUMMARY:MA Adult Immunization Conference 2024
DESCRIPTION:29th Annual MA Adult Immunization Virtual Conference\nConfidence & Compassion in a Complex Vaccine World\nTuesday\, April 2\, 2024 | 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.\nConference Website \nThe 29th annual MA Adult Immunization Conference was held in-person on Tuesday\, April 2nd\, 2024. This year’s conference theme was ‘Confidence & Compassion in a Complex Vaccine World.’ The overall goal of this conference was to educate Massachusetts healthcare professionals on current and best practices for adult immunization. The 2024 conference offered an opportunity to receive the most updated information on routine adult immunization from leading experts in the field and network with immunization experts and colleagues. We discussed vaccine safety\, sexual health and vaccines\, vaccine equity\, recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for adult vaccines\, and vaccine hesitancy and misinformation. \nWe are grateful to the many supporters and exhibitors of this conference. We also honor the 2024 MA Adult Immunization Champion: Dr. Rocio Hurtado\, for bridging the linguistic divide that often separates Spanish-speaking individuals from life-saving knowledge about vaccines and for weaving a stronger fabric of vaccine confidence within communities of color in Revere\, Chelsea\, and Lowell. \n \n  \nWelcome and Introductory Remarks\nAmy Sgueglia\, MSN\, RN\nMA Adult Immunization Coalition Facilitator \n  \n  \n \nPlenary A: Vaccines Under the Microscope: How Can We Know They Are Safe?\nPaul Carson\, MD\, FACP\nProfessor of Practice\, Management of Infectious Diseases\nDept. of Public Health\, North Dakota State University \nThis presentation reviewed in detail the multi-layered systems in place in the U.S. to assure licensed vaccines are safe\, and that both providers and patients can be quite confident in their                                                   recommending and receiving vaccines. \n  \n \nPlenary B: Sexual Health and Vaccines\nKevin Ard\, MD\nMedical Director\, Assistant Professor\nMGH Sexual Health Clinic\, National LGBTQIA+ Health Center\, Harvard Medical School \nThis session discussed how vaccines play an important role in maintaining sexual health. Prevention of sexually transmitted infections through vaccination was reviewed. \n  \nPlenary C: Vaccine Equity Panel and Q&A  \nIn this panel discussion\, the participants below discussed steps taken across Massachusetts to increase vaccine equity in adult populations. While much of this recent work was done around COVID-19 and flu vaccine initiatives\, the lessons learned can be applied to all adult vaccines. She shared lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic and how to prepare for the future. Strategies to combat misinformation were also discussed. \n  \n \n  \nPlenary E: State Immunization Update\nPejman Talebian\nDirector\, MA Department of Public Health\, Immunization Division \nThis presentation discussed topics specific to adult immunization in the Commonwealth. \n  \n \nPlenary F: National Adult Immunization Update & Latest Recommendations\nAndrew Kroger\, MD\, MPH\nMedical Officer\, Center for Disease Control & Prevention\nNational Center for Immunization & Respiratory Diseases \nDr. Kroger reviewed the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) for adult vaccines. Changes made to the ACIP schedule in the past year were highlighted. \n  \nSession A: Adult Immunization 101\nLaurie Courtney\, MSN\, RN\nNurse Manager\, MA Department of Public Health\, Immunization Division \nDuring this session\, the adult immunization schedule was reviewed\, along with the principles of vaccination\, required documentation when administering vaccines\, and how to screen patients for contraindications and precautions to vaccines. Vaccine safety\, common vaccine errors\, and how to report errors & vaccine-adverse events were discussed. COVID-19 vaccines were also included. \n  \n \nSession B: Vaccine Preventable Diseases – Not Just for Kids Anymore\nTrisha Barungi\, MPH\nEpidemiologist\, MA Department of Public Health\, Epidemiology Division \n  \nMarija PopStefanija\, MPH\nEpidemiologist\, MA Department of Public Health\, Epidemiology Division \nThis scenario-based session covered recent trends in the epidemiology of vaccine- preventable diseases both nationally and locally and provided an overview of current guidance for prevention and control in a variety of settings. \n  \nSession C: Dentists as Vaccinators – They Why & How?\nRosie Wagner\, DDS\nFounder\, Smiles by Rosie Family Dentistry \nThe dental office is one crucial branch of a patient’s comprehensive healthcare home and provides a long-term relationship for both preventive and procedural care. With emergency vaccines (such as COVID and flu) and HPV vaccine (which helps prevent oropharyngeal cancer)\, there are several types of immunizations that should be distributed to as many people in the community as possible. It is well within the scope of a dental provider to administer relevant vaccines\, and the procedural and auxiliary components are already a part of running a compliant dental office. If more dentists offer vaccines at their office\, more patients will get vaccinated\, including those who did not plan on getting immunized or those that would have to surmount barriers to care. The dental office is a convenient\, accessible\, and welcoming environment to encourage more people to get immunized. This talk covered: scope of care\, onboarding and training\, and reimbursement limitations to dentists becoming new vaccinators and how we can promote this change in the future to better protect our communities. \n\nThank you to our 2023 Virtual Exhibitors!\n\nAmerican Lung Association\nThe Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)\nCSL Seqirus\nDynavax\nThe Immunization Initiative of the MA Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (MCAAP)\nMassachusetts Association of Public Health Nurses\nMDPH: Immunization Program’s Immunization Nurses\nMassachusetts Executive Office of Elder Affairs (EOEA)\nMassachusetts Vaccine Confidence Project\nModerna\nPfizer\nSanofi\nThe Sylvie Ratelle STD/HIV Prevention Training Center (PTC)\nVaxcare\nVBI\n\n\nThank you to our dedicated Planning Committee:\nAlexandra Burke\, JSI Research and Training Institute\, Inc; Amy Sgueglia\, JSI Research and Training Institute\, Inc.; Ted Clark\, MDPH; Pam Worthington\, MDPH; Laurie Courtney\, MDPH; Susan Lett\, MDPH; Dylan Tierney\, MDPH; Pejman Talebian\, MDPH; Melissa Enos\, MDPH; Angela Kramer\, Ludlow MA \n\nQuestions?\n \nFor information on registration\, reimbursement\, continuing education certificates\, the Virtual Attendee Hub\, viewing sessions video on-demand\, or any other issues relating to the virtual conference\, please contact Conference IT Manager and Registrar\, Alexandra Burke at 617-385-3874 or by email at alexandra_burke@jsi.com. \nView the conference website here

SUMMARY:COCA Call - Recommendations for Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Doses in People Ages 12 Years and Older
DESCRIPTION:COCA Call – Recommendations for Bivalent COVID-19 Booster Doses in People Ages 12 Years and Older\nVisit the COCA website for a webinar link and more information\n \nA few minutes before the webinar begins\, please click the link below to join:\nhttps://www.zoomgov.com/j/1619923732 \nOverview\nDuring this COCA Call\, presenters will discuss CDC’s new guidance on bivalent COVID-19 booster doses for people ages 12 years and older\, including those who are moderately or severely immunocompromised. COVID-19 vaccination provides protection against serious illness and outcomes associated with COVID-19\, including emergency department or urgent care visits\, hospitalizations\, and death. Updated COVID-19 vaccines add an Omicron BA.4/5 spike protein component to the previous monovalent composition. These bivalent booster doses help restore protection that has waned since previous vaccination by targeting more transmissible and immune-evading variants. These boosters also broaden the spectrum of variants that the immune system is ready to respond to. \n\nCOCA Call Objectives \n\nCite background information on the topic covered during the presentation.\nDiscuss CDC’s role in the topic covered during the presentation.\nDescribe the topic’s implications for clinicians.\nDiscuss concerns and/or issues related to preparedness for and/or response to urgent public health threats.\nPromote health improvement\, wellness\, and disease prevention in cooperation with patients\, communities\, at-risk populations\, and other members of an interprofessional team of healthcare providers.\n\n\nPresenters\nSara Oliver\, MD\, MSPH\nCDR\, U.S. Public Health Service\nLead\, COVID-19 Coordinating Unit\nCOVID-19 Response\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention \nElisha Hall\, PhD\, RD\nLead\, Clinical Guidelines Vaccine Policy Unit\nCOVID-19 Response\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention \nEvelyn Twentyman\, MD\, MPH\nLead\, COVID-19 Vaccine Policy Unit\nCOVID-19 Response\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention \nAnne M.
